New Homes in Lonsdale Community receive outstanding environmental rating. (USGBC LEED v4 Homes)
Knox Housing Partnership (now doing business as: HomeSource east tennessee), a local affordable housing organization, has received notice that their Lonsdale Phase 2 projects have earned the U.S Green Building Council’s LEED v4 Homes-Silver level certification. These projects are among the first ten LEED v4 Homes projects certified within the USGBC system, the first in Tennessee and the first affordable LEED v4 Homes project in the world. These four houses located in the Lonsdale Community were built in 2014 and designed to meet high energy-efficiency standards and incorporated several environmentally friendly designs.
Some of the design components that aided in reaching the LEED v4 Homes-Silver level designation include:
• drought tolerant native, non-intrusive grasses and plants used in landscaping, to conserve water consumption
• Houses earned ENERGY STAR certification, which provide 30% less energy consumption compared with standard new construction,
• use of local building materials; wood, roofing, concrete products and services in construction, to minimize energy consumed by transportation,
• highly efficient conditioned air filtration system in the houses, to improve indoor air quality,
• ‘very high-efficient’-rated water fixtures, to conserve water and reduce utility bills,
• low VOC paints, adhesives and Green label carpets, to minimize off-gassing and improve indoor air quality,
• zero-step fully accessible and/or visitable homes design for individuals with mobility requirements.
“We spend 90% of our time indoors and where we live and work has a significant impact on our health and well-being,” said Nate Kredich, Vice President, Residential Market Development, U.S. Green Building Council. “By achieving certification, Lonsdale Phase 2 will be homes that residents will truly enjoy, because they are a more healthy and high-performing place to live.”
“In addition to energy and water efficient, durable and sustainable construction; Knox Housing Partnership’s CEO & President, Jackie Mayo, challenged the Lonsdale Phase 2 Project Team to design housing having healthy indoor environments, zero step access, and quality construction to benefit HomeOwners. ” said, Ken Block, Project Team Leader, Vice President of Real Estate Development & Facilities Management with Knox Housing Partnership.
The homes were made possible through funding from the City of Knoxville’s Community Development Department and the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
